Our coral restoration program has reached a significant milestone this month, with over 5,000 coral fragments successfully transplanted back to damaged reef systems along the Florida coastline. This effort, led by our Marine Research Lab in partnership with the University of Miami, represents three years of careful cultivation and monitoring.
The team uses a technique called micro-fragmentation, which allows corals to grow up to 40 times faster than they would in the wild. Each fragment is carefully selected for heat resilience, ensuring the restored reefs can withstand rising ocean temperatures.
“This is not just about restoring what was lost,” said Dr. Marina Chen, AquaVista’s Executive Director. “It’s about building reefs that are stronger and more resilient for the future. Every visitor who walks through our doors helps fund this critical work.”
Visitors can see the coral nursery in action at our new Conservation Corner exhibit, where live fragments are being grown before their ocean journey. We also offer monthly volunteer days where community members can assist with reef monitoring dives.
